McDermott Issues Statement re: SCOTUS Pick
Tom McDermott,Jr., Democratic Candidate for United States Senate, issued the following statement after the announcement of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, President Biden’s nominee for the United States Supreme Court:
“I am joining Senate Democrats in supporting the President’s selection of Judge Jackson to be the next Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Her real-world experience, superior qualifications, impeccable integrity, and commitment to upholding the Constitution make her a selection that should excite every American,” McDermott said. “One of the most important jobs of a United States Senator is to vote on appointments to the Supreme Court. Todd Young voted for three justices that now sit on the Court and who are part of a majority that will most likely overturn 50 years of precedent in Roe v. Wade this summer. We can’t afford to let Todd Young continue to put partisan politics above the rule of law,” he said.
“Ensuring that the Supreme Court has extremely qualified Justices who also look like our diverse American society is essential to the respect and honor the Court deserves. I look forward to seeing Judge Jackson becoming the first female African-American Justice to sit on this important institution of American democracy. We’ll see if Todd Young sticks to his partisan politics and tries to block her nomination or if he’s satisfied that the President selected a ‘qualified nominee with an unwavering commitment to upholding the Constitution.’ (@SenToddYoung 1/27/22 8:53 AM tweet). President Biden held up his end of the bargain by selecting Judge Jackson–let’s see if Todd Young can hold up his end to Hoosiers and the American people and vote to put Judge Jackson on the Supreme Court.”
