INDems Statement on Governor Holcomb’s State of the State Address
The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today issued the following statement by Chairman Mike Schmuhl ahead of Governor Eric Holcomb’s State of the State Address:
“Indiana Democrats will certainly appreciate Governor Holcomb’s effort tonight during his State of the State Address, but while the Governor is projecting strength, he’s hiding much of the truth about the reality of our state he’s responsible for on multiple fronts.
To start, the American Rescue Plan is the central reason why Indiana has a brighter future, and it was only Democrats who delivered this for Hoosiers. Whether it’s the state’s READI program, handing teachers a pay raise, funding public schools at levels not seen in a decade, or bringing transformational broadband investments to families – the Rescue Plan made it possible. Governor Holcomb, Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch, and Indiana Republicans can do everything in their power to ignore these facts, but the truth always prevails and Democrats are confident Hoosiers will see through the Indiana Republican Party’s hollow partisanship on the economy.
Hoosiers everywhere are also hurting tonight, because they are experiencing the consequences of the Indiana Republicans’ long-game effort to discredit COVID-19. Between the constant dismissal of the life-saving vaccine to questioning the state’s figures on cases, hospitalizations, and even deaths – Republicans have shown that their effort to score political points comes before the public health of Hoosiers. These calculated and cold-hearted maneuvers only add to the General Assembly’s culture war legislative session that would further discredit the vaccine, endanger women’s lives, give firearms to bad actors, and politicize our schools. Indiana’s chief executive will ignore all of this.
So, yes, Governor Holcomb will be right when he says Hoosier families should be optimistic about Indiana’s future. But, this opportunity was made possible because Democrats – not Republicans – delivered and stood by Hoosiers when it mattered the most. Democrats have built the foundation for our state and country to build back better. Republicans continue to show voters that their partisanship will come before anything else.”
– Mike Schmuhl, Chairman of the Indiana Democratic Party
