Senator Eddie Melton Statement on President Biden’s Joint Address
In reaction to the President’s joint address to the U.S. Congress, State Senator Eddie Melton issued the following statement:
“What Hoosiers saw tonight from President Joe Biden was a breath of fresh air. Families heard themes of progress, bipartisanship, and innovation that rekindled the feelings of hope our nation was desperate to hear. Indiana, like the rest of the nation, has been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and President Biden’s American Rescue Plan delivered by providing $1,400 stimulus checks for 91-percent of Hoosiers and more than $5.8 billion in state and local relief for our communities.
With the Rescue Plan still paving a way, President Biden’s new American Jobs Plan will set up Indiana to grow from the ‘bottom up and middle out’, not the debunked top-down approach. This means more jobs will be created, the state’s infrastructure will be revitalized, and Hoosier families will have brighter futures ahead of them. This is just common sense, responsible governing, and it’ll take partnerships – not partisanship – in order to get this done.
There is still a lot of work ahead of us. With goals to root out systemic racism in our state, hearing a United States President endorse the idea of bringing total equity to our nation is the kind of call to action that many Hoosiers and Americans needed to hear. Democrats are ready to reform our justice system, we’re ready to deliver better economic opportunities for our families, and we’re ready to deliver for Indiana and its families. Let’s all join President Biden and Vice President Harris by getting this done.”
