Indiana presumptive Democratic nominee for governor Dr. Woody Myers is calling for more transparency from Indiana officials about exactly how prepared the state is for a surge in coronavirus patients.

“The current Indiana State Health Commissioner has repeatedly refused to tell Hoosiers how many Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds the state has, how many are being added, how many ventilators are available and when more are coming,” said Myers, the former Indiana State Health Commissioner under Governors Orr and Bayh.

“Despite multiple media appearances, the Governor and Indiana State Health Commissioner have not told Hoosiers the distribution of patients testing positive for coronavirus by age, gender or race. Nor did we learn how many patients have been hospitalized, or the duration and the intensity of care during hospitalization. That information is exceptionally helpful for physicians, hospitals, and local public health officials with direct responsibility for patient care and the protection of public health.

“We know much more about the status of the pandemic in Illinois, New York and California than we do about Indiana. There’s zero reason not to make this critical information available right now. Health care professionals need to know, but it should also be available to all Hoosiers. Under a Myers’ administration, it would be.”
