Rokita’s own-the-libs rhetoric an embarrassment to the attorney general’s office
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has displayed the “Come and Take It” flag outside his office for nearly two years, citing support for Indiana National Guardsmen at the U.S.-Mexico border. The flag, originally from the 1835 Texas Revolution, has since been adopted by right-wing groups, sometimes modified to feature an AR-15 instead of a cannon. Critics argue the slogan carries problematic historical and political associations, including ties to anti-Mexican sentiment and its use on a Confederate flag at the January 6 Capitol riot. Rokita’s spokesperson dismissed these concerns, claiming the outrage over the flag reflects leftist efforts to distort American history, writes the Journal Gazette.
Beyond the flag controversy, Rokita’s office has pursued consumer protection cases, such as a lawsuit against General Motors over data privacy violations. However, his recent social media post mocking critics—featuring an April Fools’ joke about replacing the flag with a Pride flag—reinforced his reputation for prioritizing political provocation over public service. While the attorney general’s role should focus on legal advocacy for Hoosiers, Rokita appears more invested in partisan battles, which critics argue undermine the dignity and professionalism expected from the state’s top law enforcement officer.
