Indiana’s push for marijuana legalization is gaining new momentum, with fresh financial backing and bipartisan support. A new governor appears more open to aspects of the debate, but despite years of legislative attempts, no bills have yet become law. Surrounding states have already legalized some form of cannabis, raising the question: Could this finally be Indiana’s year, reported Indystar.com.

A new lobbying group, Safe and Regulated Indiana, is optimistic, though some lawmakers caution that legalization may take multiple election cycles. So far, none of this session’s bills have received a hearing, the first step toward passage.

Proposed legislation includes:

  • Medical Marijuana: Four bills (HB 1635, SB 341, SB 400, HB 1178) would create a medical cannabis program with regulatory oversight.
  • Adult-Use Legalization: Four bills (HB 1630, SB 113, HB 1332, HB 1654) would legalize recreational cannabis, establish a tax, and set age limits (either 18 or 21).
  • Decriminalization: HB 1145 would decriminalize possession of up to two ounces.
  • Advertising Restrictions: SB 166, HB 1327, and HB 1026 would limit or prohibit marijuana advertising, especially near schools and parks.
  • DUI Regulations: HB 1119 would establish a legal THC limit for driving offenses.

While momentum is growing, Indiana lawmakers still face significant hurdles before legalization can become reality.
