Indiana lawmakers propose even more restrictions on abortion access: Report
Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates in Indiana criticized new anti-abortion legislation proposed by the General Assembly, calling it “cruel and punitive” amid an already restrictive abortion environment. Indiana’s near-total abortion ban allows limited exceptions but has forced many residents to seek care out of state, risking lives and delaying critical medical care, reported NWI.com.
Proposed bills include further restrictions on abortion-inducing medication, criminalizing all abortions, seizing property linked to abortion, and banning government assistance for abortion seekers. Senate Bill 240 raises concerns about publicly identifying abortion patients, while other measures impose new parental consent hurdles for life-saving decisions.
Abortion access in Indiana has plummeted, with just 159 abortions performed in hospitals over the past year under current restrictions—down from 9,529 in 2022 when Roe v. Wade protections were in place. Advocates urge lawmakers to reject these measures, emphasizing the majority of Hoosiers support access to safe, legal abortion.
