Northern District of Indiana attorney to resign days before Trump is sworn in

Clifford Johnson, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana, is stepping down on Friday as President Joe Biden, who nominated him in July 2021, prepares to leave office. Johnson, who called the role “the capstone of my career in public service,” has had a distinguished career, including 34 years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney before leading the office, NWI.com reports.

During his tenure, Johnson prosecuted high-profile cases, including the corruption convictions of Calumet Township Trustee Kimberly Robinson and former Gary Mayor Jerome Prince, as well as numerous gang members, drug dealers, and other federal offenders.

Johnson’s legal career began after graduating from Valparaiso University and its law school. He also served at the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., before returning to Indiana.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Tina Nommay will serve as Acting U.S. Attorney until a replacement is nominated by the incoming president, Republican Donald Trump, and confirmed by the Senate.
