INDems Statement on Rokita-Morales Political Stunt Letter
This morning, the Indiana Democratic Party released the following statement on a letter from Attorney General Todd Rokita and Secretary of State Diego Morales questioning the qualifications of hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers who have federal government IDs attached to their Indiana address, including Hoosiers serving overseas, their families, and U.S. citizens with passports.
The letter likely targets the hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers who did not have a driver’s license number when registering to vote. The overwhelming majority of those would have provided the last four digits of their Social Security Number to meet the requirement or are elderly voters who registered to vote at a time when a voter identification number, like a driver’s license or state ID or Social Security number, was not required to register. This includes Hoosiers serving or living overseas.
“All this letter serves to do is disenfranchise thousands of eligible Hoosiers, including those with federal IDs attached to an Indiana address, such as active-duty service members, veterans, and Hoosiers living overseas. We should not be spending taxpayer dollars to go after eligible Hoosier voters who may not have a state-issued ID because they live overseas, serve in the military, don’t have a car, or are disabled. Stunts like this are yet another example of why Indiana has been at the bottom for voter turnout during so many years of Republican rule,” said Indiana Democratic Party Chair Mike Schmuhl.
“This is another Republican stunt to question the legitimacy of the election if they don’t like the results. Hoosiers can end the political games and one-party control in our state by electing Jennifer McCormick our next governor and Destiny Wells as our next attorney general.”
