IDP Statement on Tuesday’s GOP Gubernatorial Debate

Indiana Democratic Party Chair Mike Schmuhl released the following statement after Tuesday’s Republican Gubernatorial Debate:

“Tonight’s debate was just more of the same: more talking points, but few real solutions. Hoosiers tuned in tonight hoping to hear about healthcare and childcare, but instead they got more culture wars and petty politics. Specifics were lacking, and the attacks were plentiful.

We need a shakeup in Indiana after twenty years of one-party administrations. Jennifer McCormick will provide the change our state government needs. As governor she will work to restore the right to choose, and hold special interests, including the IEDC, accountable.”

Democratic candidate Jennifer McCormick also released the following statement from her campaign:

“Tonight, Hoosiers watched as candidates for Governor spent 60 minutes catering to the most extreme voices in their party and ignored the kitchen table issues that actually matter. It was sad, and I know Indiana can do better.

This isn’t new, however – the extremism we saw on stage tonight is exactly what forced me out of the Republican Party. This is the same one-party politics that has taken our state in an extreme direction with the wrong priorities. I know we can do so much better.

I’m running for Governor because the issues Hoosiers face – finding good-paying jobs, ensuring their kids can go to a great school with well-paid and highly-trained teachers, and the assurance that their most fundamental rights, like that of reproductive freedoms, are protected – are not going to be solved unless we end one-party rule and focus on what actually matters.

We need balance in leadership at the Statehouse and a return to getting things done for Hoosiers. As Governor, I will focus on what matters to the people of Indiana and reject the extremism that has taken over our state. I will put people over politics.”
