Taylor Reacts to Passage of Bill That Would End Decades-Old Gary Lawsuit
Senate Democratic Leader Greg Taylor (D-Indianapolis) released the following statement on House Bill 1235 passing the Senate Corrections and Criminal Code Committee with a vote of 5 – 3.
“House Bill 1235 is truly diabolical legislation. The Gary community has faced outsized gun crime and violence, and their lawsuit (filed over two decades ago) attempts to address that by holding gun manufacturers who engaged in illegal behavior accountable. The fact that this General Assembly would step in to tell a political subdivision what civil actions they can pursue is absurd.
“The Indiana Legislature has become a repeat offender of big government overreach. Again and again, I have watched this body insert itself into local communities and stop them from passing policies that are in the best interests of their residents. HB 1235 is just another instance of that, and quite honestly–I’m sick of it. I’m sick of Hoosiers being made to suffer because their local decisions are repeatedly reversed by legislators in this body that do not represent them and that they did not elect.”
