New Footage Reveals Jefferson Shreve’s 2023 Opposition to Gun Laws
Hogsett for Indianapolis released a new ad, entitled “Proud,” which has begun airing on cable and network television across the city, as well as on digital platforms.
“Proud” includes uncovered footage of Jefferson Shreve in an April 2023 Republican candidate town hall where he is asked whether he would oppose new restrictions on individual liberty at the state and local level as mayor: “I don’t think we need any more laws… I don’t think we need to add more or infringe more.” The answer was direct and his word choice specific: “infringe” appears just one time within the Bill of Rights – as part of the Second Amendment.
“This uncovered footage shows yet again why Jefferson has lost the trust of Republicans and Democrats alike: he will say and spend anything that might get him elected,” said Blake Hesch, campaign manager. “Indianapolis voters deserve the steady hand of Mayor Joe’s principled leadership, not a political candidate with his finger constantly in the wind.”
The ad also features Jefferson Shreve attending the 2016 Republican National Convention, where he served as a Trump National Delegate in support of the Trump-Pence campaign. In the same year that Shreve proudly touted his ‘AQ’ rating from the National Rifle Association, Donald Trump is similarly shown at the Republican National Convention championing his “early and strong endorsement” from the gun lobby.
Shreve still has not released his 2016 candidate questionnaire from the NRA to voters. This followed then-Councilor Shreve’s 2015 vote to oppose a common-sense gun safety ordinance requiring the reporting of stolen firearms to police, a measure that would have endangered his pro-gun legislative record.
