INDems Respond to US Supreme Court Restricting LGBTQ Rights
The Indiana Democratic Party released the following statement from IDP Chairman Mike Schmuhl after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to restrict the rights of LGBTQ Americans:
“This decision opens the door to discriminatory action by businesses in the everyday life of LGBTQ Americans. Gay marriage is protected in law in every state, yet someone can still be fired from their job or openly refused service at a restaurant because of who they are.
Hoosiers should be dismayed by the Supreme Court’s recent rulings restricting the rights of Americans to express their identity or access healthcare. No one in this country should have to live with the fear of being discriminated against because of who they love or how they identify.
LGBTQ Hoosiers are an essential part of the diversity of our state, our workplaces, and our communities. They deserve the freedom and protections to live fulfilling lives and feel that they belong in our state and in America.”
