News Release – IBLC PAC Condemns Informal Slating

The Indiana Black Legislative Caucus PAC is condemning the use of informal or “fake” slating to mislead voters in the Primary Election. The Hogsett campaign is handing out literature at early voting locations that looks like the former slating handouts. The literature only mentions Hogsett and certain other candidates for City-County Council as Democrats running for office and does not include others. The Marion County Democratic Party eliminated slating, the process where the party only backs certain candidates and discourages competition, before this election. The “slates” leave off two Black incumbent City-County Councilors and two open seats with Black candidates.

The PAC released the following statement:

“The Marion County Democratic Party eliminated slating to be more inclusive. This campaign literature is a blatant attempt to confuse voters and ensure that Hogsett and his followers hang on to power. They make it clear that Hogsett and other party leaders really had no intention of doing away with the process of hand-selecting candidates, no matter what they said. Actions speak louder than words. The elimination of slating was supposed to put the power back into the hands of the people and give them more choices. However, Hogsett supporters such as State Representative Blake Johnson (D- Indianapolis) have taken the rare step of calling anyone who runs against the mayor ‘di- visive’. The efforts to thwart the democratic process are astounding and voters should not tolerate them.”
