Governor’s order puts immigrants, law enforcement on notice: Report
Governor Mike Braun and the Indiana General Assembly are pushing the state into immigration enforcement, despite federal control over immigration since 1891. Braun’s executive order directs state law enforcement to cooperate fully with federal immigration authorities and suggests local officials take on immigration enforcement roles. Meanwhile, state lawmakers have introduced around 15 bills targeting illegal immigration, mirroring federal efforts, wrote the Journal Gazette.
Senate Bill 430, which recently passed the Senate, would increase Indiana’s participation in the 287(g) program, allowing local law enforcement to partner with ICE. Critics, including the ACLU, warn that these policies create fear in immigrant communities and could compromise public safety by diverting officers from their primary duties. Additionally, Indiana’s economy could suffer, as immigrants contribute significantly to the workforce and population growth.
Braun’s policies risk making Indiana less competitive and less safe, while also eroding the state’s humanity in its treatment of immigrant communities.
