The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is conducting a ProPEL study to evaluate the feasibility of converting U.S. 30 into an interstate-style freeway. Fort Wayne and other stakeholders along the 111-mile corridor await the final report, expected in spring, to determine whether U.S. 30 will become a freeway or an “expressway light” with J-turns. The study, relying on over 1,200 public comments, prioritizes traffic safety and economic development, per the Journal Gazette.

The U.S. 30 Coalition advocates for a freeway, projecting significant economic benefits, including over 10,000 new jobs and nearly $1 billion in increased regional income. Proposed INDOT improvements include new exits, overpasses, and a diverging diamond interchange, with costs for western Allen County upgrades estimated at $35.5-$40.5 million.

The project could enhance safety, reduce commute times, and boost interstate commerce, making it a potentially transformative development for Indiana, though challenges such as funding and public concerns about J-turn safety persist. Construction could begin as early as 2029.
