The Southern Baptist Convention voted to oppose in vitro fertilization at its annual conference in Indianapolis on Wednesday.

It is yet another attack by conservative groups on IVF, a safe, effective medical program that has helped countless Americans start a family when it seemed impossible.

“Hoosiers deserve all the family planning tools at their disposal, and IVF has helped hundreds of families in our state have the child they’ve always dreamed of. Now, that freedom could be stripped from families if Indiana Republicans follow the SBC’s guidance,” said Indiana Democratic Party Chair Mike Schmuhl.

“Republicans are making Indiana a testing ground for some of the most extreme, anti-women legislation in the entire country. Instead of helping Hoosiers start a family, they’re coming after women’s healthcare and options for struggling families. The result is already fewer young people becoming doctors in our state, and medical professionals leaving Indiana to practice elsewhere. Mike Braun already refused to federally protect IVF as U.S. Senator.

“Hoosiers Democrats know we must protect IVF, and restore women’s healthcare freedom in Indiana. No Hoosier should have the hope of starting a family torn away from them.”
